This course provides an in-depth examination of the foundational principles of criminal law in the United States. It explores the purpose of criminal law, the elements of criminal offenses, major legal defenses, and the theories behind criminal punishment. Students will learn how crimes are defined, prosecuted, and defended within the justice system, with emphasis on the role of intent, culpability, and societal standards. Key topics include the classification of crimes, legal elements such as actus reus and mens rea, justifications and excuses (including self-defense, insanity, and duress), and sentencing philosophies such as retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation, and incapacitation. š Certificate Request Instructions ā The Urban Law School To receive your official certificate of completion: 1.
