This course provides an in-depth examination of the foundational principles of criminal law in the United States. It explores the purpose of criminal law, the elements of criminal offenses, major legal defenses, and the theories behind criminal punishment. Students will learn how crimes are defined, prosecuted, and defended within the justice system, with emphasis on the role of intent, culpability, and societal standards.
